Description:

Central Asia, India, Rajasthan (northwestern India), ca. early 20th century CE. Hand-carved from soapstone, and brightly painted, this is a charming toy of an elephant bearing an ornate, rectangular howdah. A driver and a passenger accompany the elephant, who grasps a large leaf on a stem with its trunk. The elephant has been given fabulous vestments of gold, red, and green. The scene is carved as one piece with a thin soapstone slab under the elephant's feet to form a stand. Size: 6" L x 2" W x 7" H (15.2 cm x 5.1 cm x 17.8 cm)
