Central Asia, India, Rajasthan (northwestern India), ca. early 20th century CE. Charmingly hand-carved from soapstone, this is a brightly-painted toy of an elephant bearing an ornate, rectangular howdah. A driver accompanies the animal, whose trunk curves up to touch one leg. The elephant has been given fabulous vestments of gold, red, and green. The scene is carved as one piece with a thin soapstone slab under the elephant's feet to form a stand. Size: 2.9" L x 1.3" W x 3.7" H (7.4 cm x 3.3 cm x 9.4 cm)
