North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden tapa beater of a sturdy form with a rectangular beater head, a gently tapered neck, and a columnar handle with a rounded terminal. Each face of the beater head is incised with a different pattern including vertical striations, loose lattice patterns, dense lattice patterns, and crosshatching with petite circular dots. Tapa beaters like this example were used to pulverize bark sheets from the tapa tree into pliable lengths of tapa cloth. Size: 14.625" L x 1.7" W (37.1 cm x 4.3 cm)
