Description:

France or Italy, ca. 1900 CE. This is a six part plaster model of the human brain with veins painted red and small Roman numeral and lettered labels on the brain stem. The artwork of the piece, particularly on the exposed cerebellum, is very detailed. Teaching models like these brought the wonders of the human body to students who did not have access to dissecting a human corpse, representing an important step in access to biological education. Interestingly, when this model was made, very little was known about the workings of the human brain, so this model represents the pinnacle of knowledge at the time. Size: 6-1/4"L x 5-3/4"H x 4-1/2" (15.9 cm x 14.6 cm x 11.4 cm).
