Description:

Oceania, Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Dayak peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A lovely, hand-carved wooden box of a rectangular form with a separately carved lid. Adorning the body are abstract hippopotamus-like animals incised on the long sides, abstract face masks with curling tendrils in relief on the short sides, and an incised, abstract female figure holding a short glass and a non-descript bottle atop the lid. The expressive images are meant to be protective motifs for the owner of the box, though just what the images are protecting the owner from is unknown. Size: 4.25" L x 7.25" W x 3.75" H (10.8 cm x 18.4 cm x 9.5 cm).
