Description:

Oceania, Indonesia, Borneo, Ngaju Dayak, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden sculpture known as a "wuramon," a small boat that symbolically transported the souls of recently-departed ancestors to the afterlife. The boat has a round but stable base, a tapered ovoid form with a recessed area on top, a small rudder handle, and a deer-headed boat prow which symbolizes the underworld. The rudder handle and deer prow are attached to either end with several small iron pins. Size: 42.75" L x 8.3" W (108.6 cm x 21.1 cm).
