Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Dayak peoples, early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden (probably ironwood) mask. With a heart-shaped face and deepset, bulging eyes, the face has a startling appearance. The mouth is emphasized, with a full set of teeth, as is the small, well-carved nose. These masks were made to be hung on homes to ward off evil spirits, as well as to be worn during festivals and agricultural ceremonies. Comes with custom stand. Size: 6" L x 9" W x 11.5" H (15.2 cm x 22.9 cm x 29.2 cm); height on stand: 24.25" (39 cm).
