Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A large ceremonial staff carved from wood with an upper portion shaped like a double-axe-blade, and the guise of a woman integrated into the bottom portion of the head near the handle. The woman has diamond-shaped eyes, full lips, a broad nose, and a lobed coiffure that separates both axe head halves. Twin carved ovoid "eyes" look outwards, one pair on each of the obverse and reverse. The handle is comprised of a lengthy, tubular shaft with an integral suspension loop and leather strap at its base. A fabulous example! Lucite display stand for photography use only.
