Central Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Pende peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A striking woven headdress with tall green, blue, and white feathers projecting from the top of its head. Woven round eyes and a wooden nose are sewn onto the face, while thick, dangling raffia hangs from the bottom of the mask. White paint is in stripes along the top of the headdress and on the nose. The shape of the face is triangular, as are all Pende representations of human faces. The Pende make masks for a variety of occasions and entertainments. The white color and bulging eyes are symbolic of sickness, a common theme in Pende mask making, used to emphasize the connection between morality and disease to educate young members of the society about its cultural mores. Size: 14.5" W x 28" H (36.8 cm x 71.1 cm); 34" H (86.4 cm) on included custom stand.
