Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lele or Bashilele peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden face mask of an attractive minimalist style. The face presents with openwork ovoid eyes, a broad nose with a shallow central crest, rounded cheeks, thin lips with a shallow philtrum, a tapered chin, and a tall, smooth forehead. Traces of original white and pale-yellow pigment are still visible across the obverse, and fine patina has developed across most surfaces. A lovely example from central Africa! Size: 6" W x 9.75" H (15.2 cm x 24.8 cm); 12.75" H (32.4 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Minor nicks to obverse, peripheries, and verso, with a few stable fissures, and fading and chipping to original pigmentation, otherwise intact and very good. Nice traces of original pigment across obverse, and great patina throughout.
