Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mfunte peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A forged-iron currency piece of a sizable form resembling either a corseted shield or an animal pelt. The diamond-shaped panel has a pair of concave grooves on the sides, a rounded top, a shallow midrib, and a tapered base. Currency pieces like this were used primarily during unusual or significant transactions due to its ornate and grand design. Size: 10" W x 27.25" H (25.4 cm x 69.2 cm)
