Description:

Africa, Baule, ca. early 20th century CE. A sculpted and incised wood heddle pulley used to create the fine woven fabrics on the traditional narrow-band loom. Wood pulleys were designed to hold a cord that would carry a pair of heddles. This example has a flower-like terminus and both faces of the u-shaped body are incised with textile-inspired patterns. Intricately carved heddle pulleys like this example were created to protect the weaver and enable him/her to create a refined cloth. Fabulous example with nice patina! Size: 2.875" W x 6" H (7.3 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Adeon Gallery, Nick Poolos, Chicago, IL acquired before 1975
