Description:

West Africa, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved and painted wooden mask with ovoid eye holes and openwork nostrils for the wearer, a curved, upturned nose, and a large mouth with carved teeth and pronounced red lips that opens and closes. The complexion of this face has been painted white with black markings perhaps suggestive of an animal's coat. The forehead is painted a bright shade of green; the brows are painted black; and the nose is highlighted with a black stripe down the center. Note, the face has numerous tiny holes across its surface, probably from old nails, some of which remain in the mask. The back of the piece is attached to a burlap covering with some weathered leather attachments. Quite a dramatic example! Size: 7.25" W x 9.5" H (18.4 cm x 24.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
