Description:

Australia, Aboriginal people, ca. early 20th century CE. A tall, polished wooden object known as a tjurunga (sometimes churinga), in the form of an elongated ovoid. The surface is decorated on both sides, incised with spirals and wavy lines that look like sunbursts. Dark red pigment colors the surface. The wood is lightly ridged, probably eucalyptus. This is one of a class of objects considered to have religious power by the Arrernte, a group of aboriginal people who live in Central Australia, used in various ceremonies, their ownership and handling limited to specific members of a kinship group. Size: 3.9" W x 19.7" H (9.9 cm x 50 cm); 20.85" H (53 cm) on included custom stand.
