Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Dayak peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A lovely forged-iron dagger attached to a hand-carved wooden handle in the form of a stylized parrot with a rounded beak, incised facial striations, and a pair of inlaid white stone eyes. A small brass cylinder with a bulbous rim rests between the handle and the blade and features a zigzagging motif along the rim. The blade is lightly-curved with a thick body, a projecting shoulder tab with a small piercing, and a sharpened blade edge which tapers to a point. The sheath is carved from coffee-hued wood and boasts an intricate program of foliate and feathered motifs in relief. Size: 3.4" W x 18.3" H (8.6 cm x 46.5 cm); length of blade: 9.625" : (24.4 cm).

  • Condition: Sheath repaired from two halves with light adhesive residue along seam lines. Minor abrasions to blade, sheath, and handle, with light softening to some finer details, and minor oxidation to blade. Light earthen deposits throughout, and nice patina to wooden components.
