Russia, ca. early to mid 19th century CE. Russian Orthodox hand painted icon depicting various scenes from the life of Christ, hand painted in egg tempera and gesso on wood panel with elegantly delineated old Cyrillic lettering, the painted icon covered with a repousse and chased brass cover (oklad meaning "trimming" or riza meaning "robe"), finely impressed with the figures and various details of the narrative scene depicted on the painting, a floral border, and struck with old Cyrillic lettering. Panel back slats for former cross members indicate that this icon dates prior to 1890 CE. A fine example, replete with sacred iconography, strong painting, and an attractive ornamental oklad. Size: 10" W x 12.25" H (25.4 cm x 31.1 cm)
