Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. early 19th century CE. A fascinating and aged wooden ancestor figure, known as a "korwar." The figure is shown squatting, with long arms resting on its knees; the head is large relative to the body, with exaggerated, deep eyes and mouth, and it has a classically Papuan elongated chin and forehead. This is a classic pose for these "ancestor figures," who follow a conventionalized template. When new, the figure probably had shells for eyes and teeth. Korwar were carved to look like the deceased, and were consulted during crises or for advice before an important choice. Size: 4.45" W x 14" H (11.3 cm x 35.6 cm); 14" H (35.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA
