Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, New Ireland, ca. 19th century CE. A nice, large example of a knapped black stone axehead with a broad blade and tapering body. This type of blade was made to be mounted on a wooden handle. Blades like this were worked at a special place within the village that had a constant water supply, sandstone blocks for smoothing / polishing, and a shady sitting area. As late as the 1960s, some of the locals of New Ireland still had knowledge about how to make these specialized blades. Size: 3.6" W x 5.4" H (9.1 cm x 13.7 cm)
