Description:

North America, Mexico / Southwestern United States, Spanish Colonial period, ca. early to mid-18th century CE. A lengthy cast-iron sidearm dagger with sharp edges, a narrow, pointed tip, and a tang which rests inside of an ovoid wooden handle. The end of the handle is secured with a conical brass cap, and the S-shaped brass quillon has one arm raised and one arm lowered. Sidearm daggers like this example were carried by soldiers for use in emergency situations when their firearm malfunctioned, ammunition stockpiles ran dry, or an enemy combatant was close enough for hand-to-hand combat.
