Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A petite cast-bronze caduceus staff fragment. It is comprised of a lengthy pole with gradually expanding lobes underneath a pair of lateral wings. Atop a four-sided base is a dramatically-curved finial displaying a pair of stylized rams' heads with elongated faces and spiralized horns, their snouts just barely touching one another. The caduceus is an ancient symbol of health and medicine most notably associated with the Roman God Mercury (Greek Hermes), and this example may have at one time been included with a larger bronze statue of the deity. Comes with custom lucite display stand. Size: 3.875" H (9.8 cm); 5.125" H (13 cm) on included custom stand.
