Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous goblet free-blown from translucent, blue-green glass with a trio of ribbed lugs. The sizable cup is supported by a lovely, twisted leg that almost appears knotted, and a discoid foot. All is enveloped in flakes of lustrous, rainbow iridescence. The invention of glassblowing coincided with the establishment of the Roman Empire in the 1st century BC, which enhanced the spread and dominance of this new technology. With glassblowing, craftsmen were able to make a much greater variety of shapes than before. This in addition to glass's nonporous, translucent, and odorless qualities spawned a change in citizens' tastes and habits, causing glassware to rapidly supplant their ceramic equivalents and certain types of native Italian clay vessels to cease altogether by the first century CE. This vessel's spindly leg and petite loops are ideal examples of the novel and unique shapes being invented as a result of this new technology. Size: 4.4" Diameter x 4.6" H (11.2 cm x 11.7 cm)

  • Condition: Professional restoration to foot with break lines visible and nick near edge. Otherwise, excellent with beautiful iridescence and weathering film in areas. Pontil mark on underside of foot. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.
