Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic, Daunian, ca. 300 BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery olpe with a flat base, a globular body with a corseted neck line, a wide discoid rim surrounding a circular mouth, and a tall handle joining rim to body. The cream-slipped vessel boasts densely-painted dark-brown stripes of varying thickness, a singular fretted stripe, and sections of vertical striations, all interspersed by a trio of red-painted stripes. The rim is ringed with concentric brown bands, and the handle is decorated with a pair of raised roundels and a dense linear motif on the top. Size: 6.5" W x 8.875" H (16.5 cm x 22.5 cm).

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple large pieces with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Losses to areas of rim and handle, with fading to original pigmentation, and calcified encrustations across body and handle. Nice earthen deposits and great traces of original pigmentation throughout. Old inventory number written in black ink on base.
