Description:

Italy, Apulia / Daunian, ca. 300 BCE. This is a beautiful example of a kyathos, a dipper, with a flat, long, looping handle. Daunian society was a mixture of native Italians and Greeks who had settled in the area. The shapes of the vessels remained strongly influenced by the Italians -- although the kyathos form is Greek, the wideness of the strap is purely Daunian. Many of these vessels, like this one, were ornamented with bands of geometric decoration called listati. This particular example has rings of red and black with a stylized, long-beaked bird in the center. Size: 5.25" L x 5.75" W x 3.5" H (13.3 cm x 14.6 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Private Dana Simons collection, Houston, Texas via family descent
