Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A brilliantly hand-built large terracotta tripod vessel with rattle legs as well as two rattle-containing alligators crawling around the upper shoulder of the olla, painted with red pigment over brown slip. This is the type of olla that would have been held upon a dancer's head during ceremonial rituals, producing a percussive rhythm. A particularly playful and beauteous vessel hailing from the indigenous of the Guanacaste tropics. Size: 11-3/4" (29.85 cm) at widest x 10-1/4" (26 cm). Provenance: Ex-private Houston, TX collection acquired at auction or local gallery between 1982 and 1994. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #108257
