Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Guanacaste-Nicoya region, ca. 300 to 1200 CE. A hand-carved stone grinding platform, known as a metate, that was used for pulverizing various types of materials to create foodstuffs, medicine, or even poison. Included is a bar-shaped grinding tool called a mano (Spanish for "hand"). Size (metate): 14.75" L x 12" W x 7.125" H (37.5 cm x 30.5 cm x 18.1 cm); (mano): 8.25" L x 2" W x 1.9" H (21 cm x 5.1 cm x 4.8 cm)

Provenance: private South Sutton, New Hampshire, USA collection, acquired as gifts in the 1950s and early 1960s
