Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Greater Nicoya, Period IV, ca. 1 to 500 CE. An intricately carved leg from a ceremonial volcanic stone metate depicting a seated human figure with hands holding his/her expressive face, the visage still quite discernible. Elaborately carved stone metates are believed to have been made for ceremonial, rather than utilitarian use. Such examples were likely used only briefly, perhaps once, in a ceremony or ritual before being interred near the deceased, for presumed use in the afterlife.
