Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northwest Coast of Costa Rica/Nicaragua, Greater Nicoya, ca. 1000-1350 CE. One theme that we find in Pre-Columbian artworks is their association with music. It seems as though virtually every pre-Columbian culture incorporated rhythms and harmonies in ceremonial rituals, dances, theatrical events, and even warfare. We find evidence of this in the ancient musical instruments and sculptural homages to musicians and dancers in our collection. This whistle is also a parrot effigy. The parrot was cherished by the ancients of the Americas. Its brilliant plumage and its ability to fly well above the tree line made it an ideal incarnation of the sky deities. Beyond this symbolic iconography we have the remarkable skill and style of the Nicoya ceramicist; the ornate painted decoration in red, black, and cream brings this noble bird to life! 3 1/2"L x 2 1/2"W x 1 1/2"D - 4 5/8"T with stand .
