Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Guanacaste region, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. An intriguing jar resembling an abstract female figure whose nude form presents sans legs and with clefts along her pubis and buttocks. The highly burnished vessel has a round but stable base that tapers gradually to form an angular shoulder and shows sinuous arms reaching just above a pair of perky breasts. A black-painted, spiral-tipped ornament is draped from a broad necklace and hangs down the center of the chest. The stylized female countenance has bulging, almond-shaped eyes flanking an upturned nose, a pair of plugged ears, and a broad mouth bearing two rows of teeth, all beneath a flared rim. Size: 7.6" W x 10.25" H (19.3 cm x 26 cm)

  • Condition: Base repaired from a couple of large pieces, with stabilization to a few fissures, and resurfacing with overpainting along break lines. Fading to areas of original pigment, with light encrustations within some recessed areas. Nice remains of original pigment and figural details throughout.
