Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Guanacaste / Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A small celt which is hand-carved from a mottled green stone with black and beige inclusions. The rectangular celt has a sharpened lower blade edge - hence the name "axe god" - which gently tapers towards a thick head. The head boasts a pair of drilled eyes set between the diagonal striations of the stylized avian beak, and a pair of slender arms meet in the middle of the body. Two pairs of biconically-drilled suspension holes are laterally oriented along the top of the back and enable this celt to be worn as a pendant. Custom lucite display stand included. Size: 1.45" W x 3.1" H (3.7 cm x 7.9 cm); 3.8" H (9.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
