Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Guanacaste / Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A hand-carved stone amulet depicting a stylized frog with retracted legs, a bulbous body, and a triangular head with hemispherical eyes. The amphibious features are skillfully delineated, and biconically-drilled suspension holes are situated on each shoulder. The stone frog exhibits its natural caliche surface and shows that this pendant has never been polished. Black-waxed cotton necklace strand included. Size (pendant): 1.375" W x 2.3" H (3.5 cm x 5.8 cm); size (necklace strand): 22" L (55.9 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
