Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Greater Chiriqui, Diquis, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. An impressive gold amulet in the form of a frog with 4 coiled tongues, intended as a pervasive serpent symbol, also thought to represent water. As though about to spring forward, the adorable amphibian displays large, paddle feet and folded hind legs, while his fore legs form suspension loops allowing him to be worn as a pendant. Frogs are frequently depicted in the goldwork of Costa Rica and Panama, as they were associated with rainfall, fertility, and the creation of the sea.
