Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Atlantic Watershed, ca 1000 to 1400 CE. A fascinating "Sukia" figure in the form of a monkey carved from volcanic basalt, shown squatting with upraised knees, arms resting on his knees, finely carved fingers gripping a tubular shaped implement he is smoking; his back is exaggeratedly curved, and his head is finely delineated with nice angular facial features, coffee bean shaped eyes, long nose, and jutting ears, all carved in low to high relief. Sukia figures were likely intended as shamans or medicine men; though this one is interestingly depicted as a monkey with a slender tail rising up along his back. A strong example of this type from the ancients of Costa Rica. Size: 7.8" L x 6" W x 10.7" H (19.8 cm x 15.2 cm x 27.2 cm)

Provenance: private Venice, Florida, USA collection, acquired 2023; ex-Fairfield Estate collection, Conneticut, USA
