Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire), Dengese (Ndengese) culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This wooden adze or axe-shaped scepter, known as an itapi, is carved from lightweight wood and used in the dance and initiation ceremonies of the Ntotchi, a secret society. The itapi features a distinctive right-angled blade tip, with ridges and cut grooves tracing the blade's form, and a raised circular element where the blade's right angle meets the staff. This ceremonial object embodies the spiritual and social significance of the Ntotchi society's rites. Size: 19.75" L x 5.6" W (50.2 cm x 14.2 cm)
