Description:

West Africa, Ghana / Togo, Ewe culture, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A set of two hand-carved wooden figures, one male and one female, known as "venavi" or "venovi." Among the Ewe people, these figures are traditionally created to honor and protect the spirit of a deceased twin. Ewe women care for these figures by cleaning, feeding, and sometimes treating them as a substitute child, believing this care helps maintain spiritual balance and protection. West Africa has some of the highest rates of twin births globally, which has contributed to the prominence of twin-related rituals, cults, and artistic representations within the community to honor the spiritual influence of twins and ensure communal well-being.
