Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima culture, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a pair of objects from the Colima shaft tomb culture, where artisans made miniature figures and placed them inside of the family tombs that were dug several feet down shafts below households. One of the objects is a greenstone metate, finely carved, perhaps buried with an offering of ground maize upon it; the other is a figure of a seated person wearing a belt, necklace/pectoral, earrings, and elaborate headdress and holding a flat item. He sits attached to what looks like a throne or a pallet that is on its side. This figure is somewhat unusual; often we find figures from Colima who are strapped to pallets as if they are dead, ill, or sleeping, but it is rare to see one where the figure appears seated and healthy! All proceeds from this sale go for the benefit of 6 animal charities in Taos, NM. Size of largest: 4" L x 3.5" W x 3.75" H (10.2 cm x 8.9 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Private K. Holkza collection via family descent from her sister, acquired in NYC before 1975
