Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero Mezcala, ca. 300 to 100 BCE. Skillfully string-cut and finely carved from a banded greenstone of deep forest green hues with lighter green striations, this Mezcala standing figure appears to be transitioning from the M-16 to the M-18 type. The facial features are essentially defined by a pair of horizontal cuts along the upper region of the visage suggesting orbital cavities, with two round hollows representing eyes, a short horizontal cut on the lower half delineating the mouth, and two divergent cuts bisecting the cheeks from the nose to the back of the jaw. The arms and legs are differentiated from the torso. All is more akin to an M-18 figure except for the eye hollows and ear phalanges which are more readily seen in M-16 figures. A wonderful and intriguing transitional example carved from an inherently beautiful stone with marvelous banded patterns. Custom stand. Size: 3" W x 4.875" H (7.6 cm x 12.4 cm); 5.25" H (13.3 cm) with stand.
