Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. Redware effigy pottery jar in the form of a seated drinking figure with an opening behind his head. He clearly suffers some form of physical deformity with a hunched lower back. In the Pre-Columbian world, hunchbacks were viewed as sacred beings, their deformities serving as a sign that these individuals were touched by the gods. Notice the crescent shape on his elongated head. This lunar headdress probably indicated that he was a chosen member of the tribe and possibly a shaman. Perforations through ears were intended for further adornment to embellish this gent. He holds both hands to his mouth with small cup nestled in his hands, perhaps engaged in a ceremonial libation ritual. A fabulous example with a beautiful redware finish, nicely burnished, replete with manganese deposits on the surface. Size: 10.25" H (26 cm)
