Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A darling pottery sculpture of a seated mother nursing 2 children, holding one in each arm. The maternal figure is dressed in a knee-length skirt, shoulder pelts, a beaded necklace, and an elaborate headdress. Her flat body is seated with legs stretched out before her as her tubular arms loop around each baby, holding them to her petite breasts. The child on her right tenderly places his arm upon his mother's chest, while the other infant is wrapped in a swaddling cloth. Their shared familial traits are apparent with all 3 displaying incised eyes, narrow noses, and miniature mouths. Size: 4.3" W x 4.9" H (10.9 cm x 12.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Einbender collection, New York City, New York, USA, acquired from the Merrin Gallery, New York City, New York, USA in the 1980s
