Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A trio of hand-knapped obsidian spear tips that were also likely used as bloodletters for rituals and other ceremonies. Obsidian was an immensely important resource in ancient Mesoamerica that was used as a valuable trade commodity far from its source in the volcanic regions of the Sierra Madre mountains. Knapping obsidian is quite predictable and controllable and produced edges with a sharpness that exceeds that of even modern-day steel surgical scalpels. Size of largest: 6.8" L x 0.86" W (17.3 cm x 2.2 cm)

Provenance: private Lakeland, Georgia, USA collection, acquired from family, originally collected by Carlton Godwin, El Paso, Texas, USA, before 2000
