Description:

North America, Native American, Mississippian Culture, ca. 1000 to 1600 CE; Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A collection of carved shell artifacts from ancient Pre-Columbian cultures of the Mexican coastal region and North America. The Colima shells consist of 23 nacre effigies that resemble stylized lizards with incised eyes and notched peripheries and 16 cowrie shells are drilled with perforations, possibly used as pendants, adornments, or burial goods. The hemispherical "boatstone" shaped tool might be a sinker for a fishing net. While boatstones and other similar artifacts such as bannerstones are found across North America their exact use remains unclear. Size of bannerstone: 3" L x 1" W x 1" H (7.6 cm x 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm)
