Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A fine example of a lizard pendant carved from the white shell of a giant clam. The slender reptilian carving exhibits all four legs tucked beneath its plump body, a lengthy triangular tail, a narrow spinal ridge accentuated with dozens of horizontal striations, and a petaloid head bearing a pair of thick-rimmed eyes. A biconically drilled suspension hole is bored through the pendant just behind the forelegs and would have hung with the head facing upwards. Size: 1.375" W x 6.4" H (3.5 cm x 16.3 cm); 6.9" H (17.5 cm) on included custom stand.
