Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery plate with a shallow basin exhibiting a wondrous, abstract zoomorphic creature - known as a saurian - illustrated with red, black, and purple pigment. The right-facing creature displays several large claws, a mouth full of pointed teeth, and several serrated barbs projecting from around its peripheries. The surrounding spaces display dense linear motifs that create a busy yet intriguing scene from ancient Panama. Size: 12.2" Diameter x 2.875" H (31 cm x 7.3 cm)
