Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A sizable pottery bowl resting atop a squat, wide pedestal with a flared foot. The cream-ground basin is decorated with a pair of highly abstract creatures, perhaps large spiders given the number of slender limbs suggesting of legs protruding from each eerily-smiling face. Size: 10.9" Diameter x 7" H (27.7 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: Estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 335. Appraised for $2,200 by Marianne Huber in 2014.

  • Professional repair and restoration, with resurfacing and overpainting to new material along break lines. Abrasions and minor fading to original pigment, otherwise in nice condition. Great motifs within basin.
