Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery pedestal dish known as a fruitera with a pedestal foot supporting a shallow basin. Four seahorses within rectangles are painted in maroon and black on white rectangles upon a red-orange ground. The delicate bony fish are unmistakable with their long snouts and prehensile tails curled before them. Size: 12" Diameter x 3.5" H (30.5 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private USA collection, acquired before 2000. Complete provenance will be provided to winning bidder; all items from this collection have been appraised by Marianne Huber in 2014

  • Condition: Professionally repaired and restored. Rim of basin is repaired from 3 pieces with infill and overpainting along break lines. Pedestal foot is repaired with infill along break lines. Manganese deposits on the surface, and nice preservation to seahorses.
