Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. An entrancing pottery jar with an accompanying lid depicting a highly stylized anthropomorphic visage. The round-bottomed vessel body is of stable form and features linear bands of red and purple interspersed with black-painted curvilinear stripes. The face is adorned with a wide swath of purple pigment across the eyes and temples while the ovoid mouth is surrounded by thick red lips. Size (w/ lid): 5.77" Diameter x 5.9" H (14.7 cm x 15 cm)

Provenance: Estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 121. Appraised by Marianne Huber in 2014.

  • Condition: Body and lid are perhaps not original to one another but fit nicely together. Minor abrasions and fading to pigment, with scattered pitting, otherwise intact and excellent. Great pigment remains, and wonderful manganese blooms.
