Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel round-bottomed but stable form. The squat neck doubles as the head of a stylized feline creature - with light yellow skin and black crescents for fur - above a red-painted body adorned with curved forelegs and massive claws. Size: 5.75" Diameter x 5.875" H (14.6 cm x 14.9 cm)

Provenance: Estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 124. Appraised by Marianne Huber in 2014.

  • Condition: Professional repair and restoration along lower half of vessel, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and light fading to pigment, with light chipping and pitting, otherwise in nice condition. Great feline form.
