Description:

Europe, Belgian, ca. mid-19th century CE. A Civil War Era Belgian "pin fire" revolver, manufactured in Belgium with its original nickel finish and walnut grips. The style of this weapon is very similar to that of a Lefaucheux pinfire revolver - made during the same period in Liege, Belgium. Pinfire was an early cartridge system that was later made obsolete by the rim- and center-fire cartridges. Pinfire allowed self-contained, for the most part hermetically sealed, metallic cartridges; however, they had to be inserted is such a way so that the pins fit into the slots in the barrel. This said, it was much preferred over muzzle loading and paper and linen cartridges. After 1850, the popularity of the rimfire made the pinfire a relic of history books. By 1900, no one used pinfires anymore; however, the cartridges were still made for firearms as late as World War II. Size: 7.25" L x 4.45" H (18.4 cm x 11.3 cm)
