Description:

Western Europe, France, ca. 18th century CE. A lovely example of a plug bayonet of the type used primarily in France. The steel blade has an elongated triangular profile with finely-engraved decorative foliate motifs on both sides which extend downwards from the guard. The guard is comprised of molded brass elements in a T-shaped style, and a thick bifurcated disc separates guard from blade. The tubular handle is carved from dark-brown wood with a discoid finger grip and is capped with a molded brass pommel. The sheath is fashioned of fine leather with brass elements including the pointed end cap and a suspension hook. The plug bayonet was made to fit into a musket's muzzle after the single shot was fired to convert it into a longer weapon. Size: 14.25" L x 3.25" W (36.2 cm x 8.3 cm); Size of blade: 8.375" L (21.3 cm).
