Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 400 to 100 BCE. A polychrome terracotta olla depicting an avian form, standing on tripod feet, with applied, lunar shaped wings and tail, and a small projecting spherical head pierced with eyes and open mouth, subtly modeled to create the impression of a beak. All is hand painted in hues of red-orange, cream, and black. On the front panel, the artist meticulously delineated the bird's feathers with a lovely repeated pattern. A wonderful example with extensive provenance! Size: 7" nose to tail. Provenance: Ex-private R. Pearson collection, Denver, CO, acquired at Arte Primitivo; ex-Robert M. Peters collection, acquired from Harmer Rooke Galleries, NYC; ex-Peter G. Wray collection; ex-Harner collection.
