Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco / Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A magnificent pendant male/female pair of large seated figures (perhaps a couple) that show stylistic influences of both the Jalisco and Colima cultures. Both display enlarged and elongated heads as well as extremely wide torsos characteristic of the Jalisco, and yet both possess coffee-bean shaped eyes more akin to the Colima. Both are nude, with almost identical cap-like headdresses (the female's with a shell-like ornament), enlarged and flattened faces with downcast eyes, long straight noses, and pouty mouths. The female has perforations through her ears for the suspension of ornaments, sits on her bottom with short legs extended and rope-like arms, hands placed just beneath her nubbin breasts. The male sits with very long, rope-like arms placed upon his upraised knees. Both have circular appliques perhaps indicating adornment/scarification upon their shoulders. The bodies of both figures display a consistent red circular repeated motif, perhaps indicating body paint, a skin condition, or simply a remarkable pattern of surface wear. How unusual to find such a fabulous matched pair! Size: female measures 16"H x 9-1/2"W; male measures 15-1/2"H x 9-1/4"W. Provenance: Ex-Sarkisian Gallery Denver, CO acquired before 1970. - Condition: Head reattached to female with small losses to neck area as shown. Male's head reattached and body repaired from several pieces with losses to lower left hip as shown. Expected surface wear and pigment losses to both. Nice manganese and mineral deposits.
